Welcome to ABS!

Alexis Long will join the ABS team as a full-time school counselor.    Alexis is a licensed school counselor.  She completed her internship at ABS under the supervision of Amanda Sullivan several years ago.

Melissa Cleland joins the ABS team as a middle school math teacher.  Mrs. Cleland has a Master’s degree in Middle Grades Education with a concentration in Math from Appalachian State University.  She taught math for many years at Summit School and most recently at Kennedy in WS/FC schools.

Ashley Tate will be moving from the third-grade classroom to serve as our school interventionist.  Her role will address the specific needs of struggling students. She will work with students and the teacher to design interventions to address learning concerns that are most appropriate for each child.

Ashley Brady will be joining the third-grade team as a lead teacher.  Many of you already know Mrs. Brady from her time at ABS as a teaching assistant, substitute teacher, and afterschool program teacher.  Mrs. Bradley has her Bachelor's degree from Salem College and K-6 license.

Leah Lavin is moving into a full-time role as Director of Community Relations.  She will continue doing the work begun by Ellen Coble in community fundraising but also grant work and marketing.

Farewell

Hope San Filippo, Lisa Hendrix, Karon Kiger, Amber Engel, Scott Ertl, and Amanda Sullivan will be leaving ABS.  It's always hard to say goodbye.  We wish them the best as they embark on their next adventure.

Interested in working for ABS?

The Arts Based School (ABS) is a popular and successful K-8 public charter school in Winston-Salem, offering competitive salaries and NC State health plan and retirement benefits to full-time employees.

Warm collegial relationships and a high level of collaboration are consistently noted by teachers as favorite aspects of working at ABS. We accept applications year-round from licensed teachers. This contributes to our cheerful, vibrant, learning community, and results in accomplished, confident students.

Our campus, located in downtown Winston-Salem, includes two updated brick tobacco warehouses: a colorful K-4 building with a blackbox theater, dance studio and art room, and an “industrial chic” 5-8 building with a drama studio, an art room bordering an outdoor sketching garden, a modern, light-filled music room, and a large, open courtyard.

Back to School Night-Save the Date!

ABS Back to School Night is scheduled for Monday, August 16, 5-8pm.  To ease parking, we will have staggered sessions. More details soon…

Who’s My Teacher?

Classroom teachers met with the grade level team before school was out to create the class rosters for next year.  They use all that they know about your child’s academic, social, emotional, and behavioral qualities to determine which classroom is the best match.  K-6 Class placement lists will be sent to parents in July.  7th and 8th Grade class list will be delayed until August due to the Math Placement test.

New Parent Orientation

Save the Date- Wednesday, Aug 4 at 10am for the New K-4 Parent Orientation at ABS.  This program is designed specifically for new families in grades K-4th at ABS to support your transition into ABS and to answer your questions.  Please mark your calendars and join us!

Middle School Orientation

Save the Date-Wednesday, Aug 4 at 2pm for Middle School Orientation.  For new parents (grade 5-8) and also for parents new to middle school.  This program is designed to answer questions about how our middle school program works (grades 5-8) and what to expect.

Special Visits

Educational research shows that the relationship between the student and his or her teacher is one of the most important factors in a student’s academic success.  This critical relationship is enhanced by our small class size and our educators’ commitment to children.  In support of the teacher/student relationship, our teachers will be offering a Special Visit before school begins.  A Special Visit is simply an opportunity for your child to meet his or her teacher in a familiar setting, a chance to learn a bit about the class and what to expect in the coming school year.    This year’s scheduled days for Special Visits are August 12 and 13, 2021.  Your child’s teacher will be contacting you to schedule a 15-20 minute appointment.

Courtyard Construction!

We’ll receive delivery of the new music tech equipment today! Installation of flooring also begins this week. We are tremendously grateful to everyone who has contributed to the effort thus far, making this new learning, gathering, and music-making space possible for us! If your family is able to participate in the effort, please consider making a gift to help us bring this project home. If you have any questions at all, please reach out to Leah Lavin: [email protected]
