Staffing Updates

I am excited to announce several staffing updates.  It’s an exciting time of the year as we look for the next great teachers to join the ABS team.  We get to meet many wonderful educators during the process that are excited about the way we teach children.  Here’s the list so far…

Eric Smith…We couldn’t get enough of Mr. Eric’s upbeat and “can do attitude”. He will now be at ABS full time teaching PE.  We’ll be adding some PE classes in grades 2nd-4th.  His daughter, Lail, will be entering kindergarten this year as well.

Emilie Wagner is returning to Winston-Salem and to ABS.  Although when she left it was still ABES,  Emilie taught first grade and a multi-age 1st/2nd from 2003-2007.   Some of you may also know her when she was the Director of Reynolda Presbyterian Preschool.  She took some time off to raise her family and finish her Master’s in Education-Reading Specialist.  She will be returning to ABS to teach 5th grade for 2015-16.  Emilie’s daughters, Claire and Anna will be in 4th and 1st grade at ABS.

Kathie Fansler is joining the ABS team to teach first grade.  Kathie is licensed in Elementary Ed and Middle School Science.  She been teaching 12 years at the elementary level in traditional public schools, private schools and charter schools.  She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree at Salem in Language and Literacy.  She also enjoys pottery, fiber arts, and quilting.

Ashleigh Cooper is a licensed K-12 music teacher, who comes to us from Davidson County, where she taught middle school chorus and general music. She will be teaching general music/chorus for 5th-8th grades. She is an active performer in musical theater; some of our families might have caught her playing the title role in “Mary Poppins” at Twin City Stage last spring. She is a member of the NC Music Educators Association.

Still to come….7th/8th grade Language Arts/Social Studies teacher and part time Spanish teacher….Stay tuned!!

Special Visits

Educational research shows that the relationship between the student and his or her teacher is one of the most important factors in a student’s academic success.  This critical relationship is enhanced by our small class size and our educators’ commitment to children.  In support of the teacher/student relationship, our teachers will be offering a Special Visit before school begins.  A Special Visit is simply an opportunity for your child to meet his or her teacher in a familiar setting, a chance to learn a bit about the class and what to expect in the coming school year.  The Special Visit can be set up to occur in your home, here at the school, or on the phone.  This year’s scheduled days for Special Visits are 13 and 14, 2015.  Your child’s teacher will be contacting you to schedule a 15-20 minutes appointment.

Box Tops for Education Program

Parent Council would like to remind everyone to continue collecting box tops over the summer. We will have our first collection near the beginning of the year. Lisa Ransom reports that this year we surpassed our goal by raising $1055 for ABS. Thank you all for supporting the school!

Yearbook Coordinator Needed

If you like photography and design and are a skilled organizer, please consider volunteering to be the ABS Yearbook Coordinator for 2015-2016. Our former coordinator, Donna Brown, will help you get started. If you are interested or have any questions, please contact Michelle Hopkins Lawrence (mhopkins@alumni.princeton.edu).

Class & Specialist Reps For Next Year

It’s not too late to become a class or specialist rep for 2015-2016. We try to have all classroom representation set prior to our Class Rep Breakfast and training session with the staff in mid-August. Serving as a Class or Specialist Rep is a fantastic way to stay involved with the school and accumulate your needed volunteer hours. These positions do not have to be overly time consuming, but are very important to help support our teachers. You may also Co-Rep with another parent if you’d like to share the position.  Interested in volunteering?  Please contact Michelle Hopkins Lawrence (mhopkins@alumni.princeton.edu). Thank you!

Parent Work Day

This is a GREAT opportunity to start accumulating your volunteer hours for the 2015-2016 school year!  Please RSVP to smay@artsbasedschool.com  and plan to join us in cleaning out the basement of the MLK building.

There’s so much stuff we simply don’t need anymore that’s accumulated over the last 10 years! There are plenty of heavy items (some broken, some not) so we need strong backs. There’s also an enormous amount of items that are NOT heavy…reading books, textbooks, envelopes, fabric, pictures, games, chairs, party supplies, stage props, and so on that we no longer use.

Help us throw these items in the dumpster or take them home with you.

I have a large dumpster being delivered on Friday that will be placed just outside the basement doors for easy disposal of items.  Bring your hand trucks and sledge hammers!

Date: This Saturday – June 27 from 9:30 to 12:30

Back to School Night-Save the Date!

ABS Back to School Night is scheduled for Monday, August 17.  To ease parking, we have scheduled three sessions- K-2 grade will attend 5-6pm and 3-4th grade will attend 6-7pm. Grades 5-8 will attend Back to School night 7-8pm in the 7th St building.  The first part of each session will be a presentation about school wide information.   The second part of the session will be in your child’s classroom.
