Card-link Drive Fundraiser

It is time again to link your shopping rewards cards to ABS! You can connect your Harris Teeter VIC card, your Food Lion MVP card and your Target REDCard, and a portion of your purchase amounts will be donated to the school. It’s free and easy, and makes ABS money while you shop!  Just go online to link your card, or ask at the checkout line to be linked to Arts Based Elementary School. Here are the web addresses:

New Parent Orientation

Save the Date- Friday, Aug 1 at 10am or 6pm for the New Parent Orientation at ABS.
This program is designed specifically for new families at ABS to support your transition into ABS and to answer your questions. Please mark your calendars and join us!

Special Visits

Educational research shows that the relationship between the student and his or her teacher is one of the most important factors in a student’s academic success. This critical relationship is enhanced by our small class size and our

educators’ commitment to children. In support of the teacher/student relationship, our teachers will be offering a Special Visit before school begins. A Special Visit is simply an opportunity for your child to meet his or her teacher in a familiar setting, a chance to learn a bit about the class and what to expect in the coming school year. The Special Visit can be set up to occur in your home, here at the school, or on the phone. This year’s scheduled days for Special Visits are August 14 and 15, 2014. Your child’s teacher will be contacting you to schedule a 15-20 minutes appointment.

Help Wanted

It usually starts with a husky voice and hacking cough on an early morning call.   It’s a teacher calling to say that she can’t make it to school today. That’s when we call in a super sub! Many of our greatest subs are parents of our students who have a background in teaching or experience working with young children. If you have these special qualities and would enjoy spending the day with twenty joyful, exuberant, and sometimes surprising students, please email Stephanie May at smay@artbasedschool.com with your contact information to be included on the sub list! Teaching experience is required. Training sessions begin in August.

CALLING CLASS & SPECIALIST REPRESENTATIVES

Interested in being a Class Rep or Specialist Rep next year?  Recruitment for Class & Specialist Reps generally takes place over the summer once Class Lists are finalized.  Being a Class Rep is a great way to stay involved with your child’s classroom teacher and parents as well as stay on top of your volunteer hours!  Think you might be interested in being a Rep or Co-Rep next year?  See the attached “Be A Classroom Rep!” document for more details and please contact Shannon Wright (thewrights@triad.rr.com) or Michelle Lawrence (mhopkins@alumni.princeton.edu) if you are interested.  Thank you!

Who’s My Teacher?

Classroom teachers met with the grade level team before school was out to create the class rosters for next year. They use all that they know about your child’s academic, social, emotional, and behavioral qualities to determine which

classroom is the best match. To find out your classroom assignment for next year, K-6 class lists are now posted at the ABS website under “students”. Seventh and Eighth grade class lists have been delayed.

Garden Workday

Last garden work day of the summer!

Come help get the ABS grounds spiffed up before the next school year starts. Bring the kids, your work gloves, a bottle of water and a snack.
