Thursday Notes – August 7th, 2014

First Day of School –Wednesday, August 20th

 Grand Openings

Our side door is the main entrance for children in both building. It is locked at 8:15 in the morning. If you arrive after 8:15, you must park your car in the lot (please do not park in the fire lane next to the school!) and walk your child to the front door. You will need to sign your child into the computer.

In order to keep our building secure, we ask that you please do not open our side doors for anyone after they are locked. If you are exiting through the side doors and someone is waiting there, ask them kindly to enter through the front. Thank you!

Parking Lot Safety

  • Please drive slowly and cautiously through school parking lot at all times.
  • Do not use cell phones while in our parking lot.
  • Watch for children and adults in parking lot, especially the first few days when many parents will be parking and walking their child into the school.
  • Please allow extra time the first week as parents and children become accustomed to the routine.
  • Please be kind and courteous to parking lot helpers.
  • Please cross on crosswalks when walking children into the building.
  • Please be responsible for explaining the drop off/pick up procedures to your afterschool daycare vans or anyone else who may be picking up your children.
  • Remember to enter only on Chestnut St. (by white church) during pick-up and drop-off.

Pack a Lunch and a Snack!

All students must have lunch each day.  Lunches must be brought from home.  If a student does not have a lunch, we will contact a parent to provide the lunch.  On Fridays, we will offer a pizza meal fundraiser from Papa John’s that includes 2 slices of pizza, a fruit, and a milk or juice for $5.   K-4 students can order white milk, chocolate milk, or orange juice for $.75  in their classroom.  5-8 grade students have access to healthy choice vending machines.  ABS wants to promote healthy eating and good nutritious choices.  Students should bring a healthy lunch and snack each day.  Healthy snack choices include bottles of water, fruits, crackers, cheese, and granola bars.  Please do not send sodas, candy, or other high sugar snacks.

 No Backpacks

You may have noticed on the supply lists that students do not use backpacks at ABS.  We do allow students to use small canvas totes or drawstring bags.  It should be large enough to hold a notebook or folder, but small enough to fit on the hooks in the hallway or in your locker (in the new building). We do have a school rule that children should not bring toys from home.  Please be sure you are aware of what children are packing into their totes and bringing to school.  Toys often become a distraction either when children want to show them off, play with them, or worry about them being taken by another child.  Students will be bringing home important papers especially in their Thursday Packets so be sure to have them clean out and look through their tote each evening.

Activity Fee

Each family is asked to pay $30.00 per year per child to help cover the costs of our extensive curriculum enhancement activities, including field trips and art trips.  Fees are payable at the start of the year and may be paid for the full year or in smaller increments, if needed.  Financial assistance is available to those families with demonstrated need per the approval of the principal.  Checks should be made out to The Arts Based School and turned into Ms. Wise in the front office or at Back to School night.  Also payable online at http://mkt.com/the-arts-based-school/activity-fee

Who’s My Teacher?

Classroom teachers met with the grade level team before school was out to create the class rosters for next year.  They use all that they know about your child’s academic, social, emotional, and behavioral qualities to determine which

classroom is the best match.  To find out your classroom assignment for next year, K-8 class lists are now posted at the ABS website under “students”.  Supply lists are also available at our website under “students”.
