Meet our support staff

Jennifer Carter – Speech Pathologist
Jennifer has been the speech-language pathologist at ABS since 2009. She obtained her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Speech-Language Pathology at East Carolina University. She has experience working in several different settings with a variety of ages but is passionate about the school-age population and helping increase student’s communication skills and academic success. She is licensed through the state of North Carolina and certified through the American Speech-Language Hearing Association. In her free time, she loves to read, hike, cook, run, and spend time with her husband and daughter.

 

 

 

Scott Ertl – School Counselor
Scott will be serving as our second school counselor along with Amanda Sullivan.  Mr. Ertl has his Master’s and is Nationally Board Certified with over 18 years of experience.  Many in our community already know Mr. Ertl as the inventor of the Bouncy Bands.

 

 

Anne Faulkner – Elementary School Exceptional Children’s Assistant Teacher

Anne Faulkner has enjoyed working with students of all ages while here at Arts Based School. She is very excited to be part of the EC team. Anne grew up here in Winston-Salem and graduated from Salem College. She is currently working on a masters degree in special education. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, gardening, and sewing.

 

 

 

 

Liz Green – Curriculum Coordinator
Mrs. Green is a veteran teacher who has been at ABS since 2005. She is a graduate of Wake Forest University where she studied Sociology and Studio Art. She received her Masters Degree in Education from Salem College. Mrs. Green is a National Board Certified teacher, and licensed in Academically and Intellectually Gifted education (K-12), and as a Reading Specialist (K-12). Mrs. Green enjoys supporting teachers and is especially passionate about helping new teachers feel confident and successful. In her spare time she stays busy reading, gardening, drawing, cooking, and spending time with her husband and four-year-old son.

 

 

 

Ceci McGuire – Reading Specialist
Ceci McGuire has been the reading specialist at ABS since 2006.  She enjoys having the opportunity to work with students in many grade levels.  She went to the University of Cincinnati for her undergraduate work and received her masters of Language and Literacy from Salem College.  She lives in Lewisville with her husband, daughter (an ABS alumni) and two cute kitty cats.

 

 

 

 

 

Jim Sharkey – Middle School Exceptional Children’s Teacher
Jim obtained his Masters in Education from the University of Maine in 2011 with concentration in Special Education and Social Studies. He taught Children with Emotional Disabilities at Westbrook High School in Maine, and Children with Autism at Westside Elementary in Roanoke, Virginia. Jim took the last four years off to concentrate on a music career. He has performed throughout the southeast and has recorded two CDs of original material and one of traditional Irish folk. He has also taught video production and animation classes at The Community Middle School in Roanoke, Virginia, during this time, as well as at The Bower Center for the Arts in Bedford, Virginia. Jim served for five years as a photographer in the US Navy in the 1980’s in San Diego, California where he earned a B.A. in Television/Radio Production at San Diego State University. He worked for several years in the 90’s at WMFY in Greensboro and WXII in Winston-Salem as a photojournalist. In his time off Jim continues to write songs and perform two to three times a month, as well as stay involved in photography and video production. He is excited about returning to the classroom and making his contribution to provide the very best education and experience for the students and their families.

 

 

Amanda Sullivan – School Counselor
Amanda has worked as a counselor in various settings for over 15 years, but loves being at ABS the most! She received her BA in Psychology at Salem College and her Masters in Education in Counseling at Wake Forest University.   In addition to working with students, she loves animals of all kinds (especially dogs!), loves the great outdoors, and is also a photographer.  She especially loves helping children express themselves through photography and other art forms.
