Enrollment is completed by lottery in early February. You may fill out an student application for fall beginning January 1st. Those children accepted based on the lottery will be mailed enrollment packets. All others will be added to the waiting list in the order picked from the lottery. Once a child is enrolled at ABS he or she has a spot each year thereafter unless withdrawn. Siblings of currently enrolled students receive priority in the lottery.
How much does it cost to send my child to ABS?
ABS is publicly funded and free to all students. We ask families to contribute a $30 activity fee each year to help cover the costs of our field trips and art trips. Scholarships for the activity fee are available. You can pay your activity fee online.
Does ABS follow the same calendar as the public schools?
ABS generally follows the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools calendar, except for trimester conference days. Our calendar may be accessed online at www.artsbasedschool.com. We do not necessarily follow Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools snow days. For information about school closure, tune in to WXII News 12, or call the school, 748-4116.
What is a charter school?
Charter schools are funded by the state of North Carolina with a mandate to provide innovative education according to the specific school’s charter. Charter schools are run by their own Board of Directors and are not part of a city or county school district. Charter schools follow state regulations regarding student achievement, funding, and access for all students.
What is ABS’ curriculum?
ABS teaches the Common Core and Essential Standards as defined by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction using the arts-music, dance, drama, and visual art. Common Core and Essential standards can be found online at www.ncpublicschools.org.
What is expected of ABS’ parents?
We want parents to be involved in their children’s education. We require all parents to volunteer one hour per week per child. Volunteer time may be done at the school or at home, depending on your schedule and the help that is needed.
Does ABS provide transportation to and from school?
We do not offer bus transportation. Parents must be able to get their children to and from school on their own. We have several after school programs that pick up students from ABS, in addition to our on-campus YMCA after school program.
Does ABS provide lunch service?
We do not participate in the federal free/reduced lunch program. All students must have lunch each day. Lunches must be brought from home. To purchase lunches on Fridays, you may send a check or cash with your child daily,weekly or monthly. Students will turn lunch money to their teachers. Parent may establish a lunch account with Mrs. Wise, finance manager, in the Front Office. Pizza Lunch w/milk costs $5. Milk/juice costs $.75. If a student does not have a lunch, we will contact a parent to provide the lunch.
How do I enroll my child in the after school program with the YMCA?
Enrollment for the YMCA after school program is handled through the Central YMCA. Please contact them directly at 721-2100
What is the class size at ABS?
Classes are typically 18-20 students.
Will my child have homework?
Teachers will assign homework that is meaningful and relevant to the current topic of study. Homework may come in the form of projects, reading, or research. We will avoid using “busy work” for homework.
How do you assess student progress?
Students attending the Arts Based School will be assessed using a portfolio system in place of the traditional report card. The portfolio is designed to illustrate a student’s academic growth and successes as well as guide the teacher in planning appropriate instruction. Teachers at ABS do not issue letter grades. Teachers use observation, interviews, analysis of student work and performance tasks to assess student understanding. Examples of student work, as well as other objective standards of assessments are incorporated into the student’s portfolio to give an enhanced portrait of the student’s progress. These portfolios will be discussed and presented to parents during the Student-Teacher-Parent conferences scheduled in November, February, and May. (See School Calendar for dates).
Do students take standardized tests?
Students are tested in 3rd-8th grade each May on the North Carolina End of Grade tests. We also use Measures in Academic Progress (MAP testing) to assess students in 3rd-8th grade, three times a year to assess student growth.
