Veteran’s Day-No School
Friday, November 11
Conference Time is Coming
Soon your child’s teacher will be setting up conferences to discuss your child’s progress. Students attending the Arts Based School are assessed using a portfolio system in place of the traditional report card. The portfolio is designed to illustrate a student’s academic growth and successes as well as guide the teacher in planning appropriate instruction. Teachers at ABS do not issue letter grades. Teachers use observation, interviews, analysis of student work and performance tasks to assess student understanding. Examples of student work, as well as other objective standards of assessments are incorporated into the student’s portfolio to give an enhanced portrait of the student’s progress. These portfolios will be discussed and presented to parents during the Student-Teacher-Parent conferences. Please be sure you schedule and attend your conference so that you can support your child’s learning.

Parent Council News:
Our faculty very much appreciates the wonderful snacks many parents have provided for our meetings this year. We have quite a collection of platters, coolers, plates, etc at the 7th Street Building. Please stop in and pick up any of these items that may have been left behind. Our Hospitality committee will be taking anything left after Thanksgiving Break to Goodwill.
Special Parent Council Meetings Scheduled for November
We will not have our regular Friday morning meeting in November, but will host two other meetings in its place.
Math Workshop on November 3rd has been CANCELLED– Unfortunately, we’ve had only a few parents that have registered or are able to attend the workshop on November 3. For that reason, we are cancelling the Parent Math Workshop. It is my hope that we can reschedule the workshop in the Spring and get more participation. In the meantime, I highly recommend the book “What’s Math Got To Do With it?” by Jo Boaler. –Mrs. Hollis
Positive Discipline for Parents on Saturday, November 19, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Positive Discipline is for parents who are looking for long-term parenting skills that will encourage their children to think for themselves, become more responsible and have a greater respect for themselves and others. The teachings on Positive Discipline are filled with non-punitive, respectful methods that will incorporate kindness and firmness into parenting, help parents get to the core of their child’s misbehavior, bring more joy into the home and give parents a sense of accomplishment. There will be a $10 charge per family to attend the workshop and childcare will be provided. See attached flyer to sign up, or pick up one in the front office.
January Jam – Jan. 20th 2:30-4:00pm
January Jam is a dance party that the school holds as a fundraiser event and we are looking for an awesome DJ. If anyone has a contact, please contact Ryan Leigh Runyon. (email@example.com) Volunteer opportunity as well, starting early recruiting volunteers:)
Raffle at First Friday Sing
