Teacher Appreciation Week at The Arts Based School!
May 6th-10th is a special time for students and families at ABS to take a few extra minutes to give extra love and show appreciation for our amazing teachers. Hospitality Committee is providing guidelines for each day of the week to simplify for families with students in multiple grades or classes.
Feel free to use these ideas or go out on a creative limb to show your appreciation all week!
Monday, May 6th Plant or Flower Day

*Class Reps, please consider providing a container of some kind (large jar, vase, etc.) for your teacher to store these lovely surprises!
Tuesday, May 7th Favorite Snack & Drink Day
Teachers love a good snack & all have a favorite beverage! Coffee? KIND bar? Tangerine? Chips? Sparkling Water? Check the Staff Favorites List to see what your teacher loves best!
Wednesday, May 8th Note, Card, Picture, or Painting Day
Bring a homemade card, Thank You note, or original artwork for your teachers today! *Remember that Specialists, office staff & administrators like treats too! Offer some appreciation for these wonderful staff members today or any day this week!

Everyone enjoys a sweet surprise! Chocolate? Cookies? Gluten Free Brownie? Ask the children! They know what their teachers love as a splurge!
Friday, May 10th Surprise Day
Whatever you think that your child’s teacher would enjoy! Extra hugs or high-fives? A gift card to buy a summer reading book? A journal & new pen for writing? So many ways to provide a happy surprise!

The end of the school year is rapidly approaching, and we still need a volunteer to coordinate Field Day for the 5th-8th grades. Our goal at ABS is to create classrooms that are balanced across all demographic categories. Grade level teams know their students well, spend a lot of time thinking about the best way to group students and teachers, and can be trusted to accomplish this goal. Occasionally, there may be a situation where a parent has input to give about his or her child’s placement. Administrators will consider these extenuating circumstances along with all of the other considerations already given to class placement. There is no guarantee that the input given will determine your child’s placement.
We have extended the deadline to June 1st. If you do have extenuating circumstances that we may not be aware of, please complete this form to provide information even if you have already submitted a request. Student Class Placement Form
Don’t forget to get your ABS Yearbook! We have limited quantities still available at each front desk.
First and Last Friday Sings
First Friday Sing this month is Friday, May 2, will be at 1:50, in the ABS Ewing Theater.
Final Friday Sing of the year will be Tuesday, June 4 at 10:00am, for all K-8 students (and parents) in the 7th Street Courtyard. If rain is predicted, we will have to cancel.
7th and 8th Grade Math Classes
Parents of rising 7th and 8th graders may be wondering about math classes for next year. All students are required to learn 7th grade math in 7th grade and 8th grade math in 8th grade. Most students will take these required classes as their only math instruction. Some students who have demonstrated advanced skills in math will be eligible for advanced math instruction in addition to the math they are required to learn for their grade level. We offer Math I for 7th graders and 8th graders who qualify, and Math II for 8th graders who qualify. Mrs. Raper will send letters home after school ends letting parents know their child’s math placement.
