More Staffing Updates
I am excited to announce several staffing updates. It’s an exciting time of the year as we look for the next great teachers to join the ABS team. We get to meet many wonderful educators during the process that are excited about the way we teach children. Here are some new additions to ABS:
Christi Barnes-Christi has been thrilled with Arts Based School, as a parent, for five years; she is equally thrilled to be joining the staff as a first grade assistant with Mrs. Howard! Christi earned a degree in Elementary Education from Appalachian State University. Upon graduation, she taught for eight years in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System. In 2006, she and her husband, Greg, welcomed their first child home. The following ten years brought two more children and a move to Winston Salem. She loves the energy that children create and is eagerly anticipating being back in a classroom.
Gail Boaz is joining the ABS middle school math team to teach 7th/8th grade math classes. Ms. Lewis will continue teaching Math I and Math II. Gail has been teaching math at the high school and community college level for over 10 years. She has her Master’s degree from Appalachian State University. She enjoys looking for ways to make math meaningful to students by connecting it with real life and student interests.
Hannah Brown is the Administration Assistant for the MLK building. She graduated from Shorter University in Georgia with a degree in Theater, concentrating in stage management. She’s excited to use her organizational skills and love of all things creative at ABS. In her spare time, she enjoys photography, journaling and local coffee shops. You may recognize Hannah from her volunteering days working with Romeo and Juliet.
Angela Hunt will be joining the ABS team to teach middle school Spanish. Angela is licensed in K-12 Spanish. She’s been teaching 9 years in Winston-Salem, Texas, and most recently Virginia. She has enjoyed traveling and studying in Mexico, Spain, and Guatemala. In her free time, she plays piano and sings. Angela has a daughter, Isabella that will be in 5th grade at ABS next year.
Melissa Leak will be a first grade teaching assistant with Mrs. Fansler. She is an ABS parent. Her daughter, Charlotte begins sixth grade this year. Melissa has experience as a reading tutor, preschool teaching assistant, and yoga instructor.
Lauren Quintal is overjoyed to be joining the ABS family as a 3rd grade teacher. Ms. Quintal graduated from High Point University with a degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Theatre. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in STEM Education at HPU. Ms. Quintal is originally from the beautiful, snowy state of Maine. She loves spending time at the ocean, baking, watching football, volunteering at the animal shelter, attending plays, and traveling. Ms. Quintal enjoys finding ways to bring her passions of children’s literature, theatre, music, and dance into the classroom each day.
Medicines at School
The Arts Based School staff is not allowed to administer any herbal, over-the-counter, or prescription medications or ointments without prior written authorization from the child’s physician. If your child needs to take medication during school hours or your child has a life threatening allergy that requires medication to be kept at the school, please email Stephanie LeFever at slefever@artsbasedschool to obtain the necessary forms that must accompany all medications dropped off the first day of school. All medications must be dropped off by a parent and kept in the school office.
Back to School Night-Save the Date!
ABS Back to School Night is scheduled for Monday, August 15. To ease parking, we have scheduled three sessions- K-2 grade will attend 5-6pm and 3-4th grade will attend 6-7pm. Grades 5-8 will attend Back to School night 7-8pm in the 7th St building. The first part of each session will be a presentation about school wide information. The second part of the session will be in your child’s classroom.
Who’s My Teacher?
Classroom teachers met with the grade level team before school was out to create the class rosters for next year. They use all that they know about your child’s academic, social, emotional, and behavioral qualities to determine which classroom is the best match. Parent requests received before May 1st are also considered along with other information. To find out your classroom assignment for next year, class lists will be posted on the ABS website by July 1st.

Educational research shows that the relationship between the student and his or her teacher is one of the most important factors in a student’s academic success. This critical relationship is enhanced by our small class size and our educators’ commitment to children. In support of the teacher/student relationship, our teachers will be offering a Special Visit before school begins. A Special Visit is simply an opportunity for your child to meet his or her teacher in a familiar setting, a chance to learn a bit about the class and what to expect in the coming school year. The Special Visit can be set up to occur in your home, here at the school, or on the phone. This year’s scheduled days for Special Visits are 11 and 12, 2016. Your child’s teacher will be contacting you to schedule a 15-20 minutes appointment.
