First Day of School –Wed, August 23rd
Music in Middle School

All 5th – 6th graders at ABS get to play an instrument in band! 5th and 6th grade students playing a band instrument for the first time may choose from flute, trumpet, clarinet, or trombone.
7th and 8th graders elect either band or chorus, and this process was completed last spring. 7th and 8th graders new to ABS who have never played a band instrument before must choose chorus. (Both 8th grade band and 8th grade chorus go to Carowinds in the spring.) Band will begin during the first week of school. Please be sure your child brings their instrument! Your new homeroom teacher will email you the scheduled band days.
Students will receive rental assistance or may borrow a school-owned instrument if their Family Income Survey indicates that they qualify for free or reduced lunch. (You must fill out the form every year.) Note that not all instruments are available through the assistance plan.

In addition to the band and chorus programs, students in the 7th Street building will sing in productions and play African drums with Tam Tam Mandingue and “Mr. Bill” Scheidt.
Call for volunteers to help deliver text books to teachers’ classrooms next Tuesday morning (August 8th) at 10:00am. It would be nice to have 4-5 people and would probably take an hour or two. Meet in the MLK building cafeteria.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR NEW PARENT ORIENTATION
New Parent Orientation is scheduled for next Wednesday, August 9, at 10:00. We need two adults to supervise children on the playground while parents attend the meeting. If you would like to help and get a jump on your volunteer hours, please contact Julee Nunley (email@example.com.)
PARENT REPS NEEDED!
Serving as a Class Rep (or Co-Rep with another parent) is a fantastic way to stay involved in your child’s classroom – it’s also a great way to get to know your teacher and the other parents! Representatives are also needed help Specials teachers coordinate volunteers and the supplies needed for their classes. PARENT REP & TEACHER BREAKFAST: MONDAY, AUGUST 21st
Calling all Class Reps, Specialist Reps, Teachers and Staff! Please join us Monday, August 21st at 8:30am in the ABS Café for a meeting with Principal Robin Hollis and the Parent Council Board. Breakfast, coffee and juice will be provided. We look forward to seeing you all there!
August Garden Workdays
We have much work to do in the ABS garden! Come out for a mini-workday on August 5 or 12, from 9:00-11:00 or for our big back-to-school garden workday on Saturday, August 19, from 9:00-1:00. Bring gloves if you have them and plenty of water. RSVP appreciated but not required: email@example.com.

Become a Garden Guru
Do you want to fulfill your ABS volunteer hours on your own time? The ABS garden is organizing for next year! We’re looking for volunteers to steward one small part of the ABS garden when it’s convenient for you. This job can happen in one hour a week or four hours a month- you decide how to allocate your time. No experience is necessary- we will train you. If you’re interested, please plan to attend a mini workday on Saturday August 5 or 12, from 9-11. Back to School Night-Save the Date!
ABS Back to School Night is scheduled for Monday, August 21. To ease parking, we have scheduled three sessions- K-2 grade will attend 5-6pm and 3-4th grade will attend 6-7pm. Grades 5-8 will attend Back to School night 7-8pm in the 7th St building. The first part of each session will be a presentation about school wide information. The second part of the session will be in your child’s classroom.
ABS Family/Student Directory
To be sure we have accurate contact information for the ABS family/student directory, each family should receive a confirmation email to verify their information on Friday, August 4. Families that do not want to be published in the ABS directory should email Principal Hollis at email@example.com before August 11. If you did not receive a confirmation email, please email Principal Hollis.
New Parent Orientation
Save the Date- Wednesday, Aug 9 at 10am for the New K-4 Parent Orientation at ABS. This program is designed specifically for new families in grades K-4th at ABS to support your transition into ABS and to answer your questions. Please mark your calendars and join us!
Middle School Orientation
Save the Date-Wednesday, Aug 9 at 6pm for Middle School Orientation. For new parents (grade 5-8) and also for parents new to middle school. This program is designed to answer questions about how our middle school program works (grades 5-8) and what to expect.
Educational research shows that the relationship between the student and his or her teacher is one of the most important factors in a student’s academic success. This critical relationship is enhanced by our small class size and our educators’ commitment to children. In support of the teacher/student relationship, our teachers will be offering a Special Visit before school begins. A Special Visit is simply an opportunity for your child to meet his or her teacher in a familiar setting, a chance to learn a bit about the class and what to expect in the coming school year. The Special Visit can be set up to occur in your home, here at the school, or on the phone. This year’s scheduled days for Special Visits are August 17 and 18, 2017. Your child’s teacher will be contacting you to schedule a 15-20 minute appointment.
Parking Lot Safety
- Please drive slowly and cautiously through school parking lot at all times.
- Do not use cell phones while in our parking lot.
- Watch for children and adults in parking lot, especially the first few days when many parents will be parking and walking their child into the school.
- Please allow extra time the first week as parents and children become accustomed to the routine.
- Please be kind and courteous to parking lot helpers.
- Please cross on crosswalks when walking children into the building.
- Please be responsible for explaining the drop off/pick up procedures to your afterschool daycare vans or anyone else who may be picking up your children.
Remember to enter only on Chestnut St. (by white church) during pick-up and drop-off.
