First Day of School –Wednesday, August 17th


Music in Middle School

All 5th – 6th graders at ABS get to play an instrument in band! 5th and 6th grade students playing a band instrument for the first time may choose from flute, trumpet, clarinet, or trombone.

7th and 8th graders elect either band or chorus, and this process was completed last spring. 7th and 8th graders new to ABS who have never played a band instrument before must choose chorus. (Both 8th grade band and 8th grade chorus go to Carowinds in the spring.) Band will begin during the first week of school. Please be sure your child brings their instrument! Your new homeroom teacher will email you the scheduled band days.

Students will receive rental assistance or may borrow a school-owned instrument if their Family Income Survey indicates that they qualify for free or reduced lunch. (You must fill out the form every year.) Note that not all instruments are available through the assistance plan.

In addition to the band and chorus programs, students in the 7th Street building will sing in productions and play African drums with Tam Tam Mandingue and “Mr. Bill” Scheidt.



It’s always hard to say good bye.  We wish Mrs. Ravenstein the best of luck as she moves into her next adventure.  Mrs. Brittany Ravestein will be moving back to Ohio in the next few weeks for her husband’s new job.  We are sad to see her go but know that she will enjoy being near her extended family.  We thank her for her time and commitment to ABS in helping develop into the school that we are.


Staffing Updates

Mrs. Trish Goldberg will be moving into the lead teaching role in kindergarten with Miss Hadera.  As some of you may know, Mrs. Goldberg has been working at ABS for 4 years as a teaching assistant.  Prior to ABS, she worked at Temple Emmanuel Preschool as a Preschool Teacher.  She is an expert at working with young children.  She received her teaching degree from Salem College and is currently working on her Master’s. Mrs. Goldberg is also a ABS’ parent.  Her daughter, Isabel will be in eighth grade this year and Laila will begin fifth grade.


Welcome to Missy Warren!  Missy Warren will be working with Martha Holland in kindergarten.  Mrs. Warren has a degree in Early Childhood Education.  She most recently worked at the YMCA as the Active Older Adult Coordinator.  She has been a preschool teacher, substitute teacher, and longtime volunteer for Arts for Life.


Back to School Night-

Please note changes in times and format.

ABS Back to School Night is scheduled for Monday, August 15.  To ease parking and crowding, we have scheduled three sessions- Kindergarten and 5-6 grades will attend 5-6pm. 1,2, 7th   grades will attend 6-7pm. Grades 3,4 and 8  will attend Back to School night from 7-8pm.  The first part of each session will be an opportunity to take a self-guided tour and visit arts classrooms.   The second part of the session will be a presentation in your child’s classroom.



We only have a few more teachers still in need of a Classroom Representative.  Serving as a Class Rep (or Co-Rep with another parent) is a fantastic way to stay involved in your child’s classroom – it’s also a great way to get to know your teacher and the other parents!  We are looking for volunteers from the following classrooms:  3rd Grade Ms. Quintal (co-rep) & two reps for 8th grade.  We are also looking for Specialist Reps for Ms. Cooper (Music/Choir), Ms. Hayes (Band), Ms. McIver (Drama), and Mr. Zayas (Drama).  If you are interested in one of these positions, please email Julee  Nunley (julee@thenunleys.net) or Lindsay Deibler(lindsaydeibler@gmail.com).



BoxTops- Coordinator and Volunteers for 3 collection dates throughout the school year. This position is an easy one to do from home!! 🙂


Fall Fest Coordinator – We’re looking for a new coordinator for the Fall Fest, a fun Saturday afternoon event with games, music, and food trucks.  This year’s event is scheduled for October 1, with a rain date of October 8.  October will be here before we know it, so plans will need to get underway soon after we return to school.  Our past coordinator, Tommy Priest,  will be available to help make connections with local food trucks.  If you’re interested learning more about this important volunteer opportunity, please contact Julee Nunley (julee@thenunleys.net).


Class Rep & Teacher Breakfast– Childcare volunteers to be on the MLK playground while class reps are busy getting things done for the school year – August 15th 8:30am-9:30. (Bring your own children and let them run around too:)

Calling all Class Reps, Specialist Reps, Teachers and Staff!  Please join us Monday, August 15th at 8:30am in the ABS Café for a meeting with Principal Robin Hollis and the Parent Council Board.  Breakfast, coffee and juice will be provided.  Following this meeting, we will have a short training for reps on using Shutterfly share sites.  We look forward to seeing you all there!

All are on Fridays, but please advise not all are the 2nd Friday of the month as in previous school years- Dates are : Sept. 16th, Oct. 14th, Nov. – No Meeting, Dec. 16th, Jan. – No Meeting, Feb. 17th, March 17th, April- No Meeting, May 12th (in the months with no morning meeting we will be possibly having some evening meetings on topics of interest as in Positive Discipline Workshop or Bullying)

Special Visits

Educational research shows that the relationship between the student and his or her teacher is one of the most important factors in a student’s academic success.  This critical relationship is enhanced by our small class size and our educators’ commitment to children.  In support of the teacher/student relationship, our teachers will be offering a Special Visit before school begins.  A Special Visit is simply an opportunity for your child to meet his or her teacher in a familiar setting, a chance to learn a bit about the class and what to expect in the coming school year.  The Special Visit can be set up to occur in your home, here at the school, or on the phone.  This year’s scheduled days for Special Visits are 11 and 12, 2016.  Your child’s teacher will be contacting you to schedule a 15-20 minutes appointment.
