We would like to express a HUGE heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who joined together to reach record-breaking totals in our 2017 Annual Giving Campaign! You donated, you pledged, you spread the word and as a result, you helped every single child at ABS.
Our giving results this year are truly remarkable…

TOTAL DOLLARS DONATED $53,786.56
Just five years ago, our campaign was in a much different place. We had only 8.6% participation from our families, 8.3% participation from our Board and had $4,400.00 in total donations. Since that time, the support has continued to grow each year. The word is out about this place and we thank you for being a part of it!
A special thanks goes out to our ABS Board for their 100% participation! Our Board is comprised of community members, most of whom have never had a child attend this school but believe whole-heartedly in our mission and how we achieve it.
The people are the foundation of our school – the families, teachers, staff, and friends. Together, we are the village. Your participation and generosity during this campaign has been inspirational. What you have given the students is tremendous. Our feelings of gratitude are immeasurable.

Author Visits ABS
Author/Illustrator Jonathan Miller will be visiting ABS’s 2nd and 3rd grades on April 25. His picture books chronicle the adventures of Sammy the Wonder Dachshund. Each illustration is uniquely crafted from cut paper and card-stock, averaging 25 hours per page to complete. Field Day Coordinator for 7th Street Building
The Parent Council is looking for a coordinator for Field Day for the 7th Street building. Field Day will be held on the last day of school, Friday June 2. The coordinator will work with class representatives to host games and activities for students to participate in. Our past coordinator, Tommy Priest, has offered to pass along his contacts and spreadsheets from previous years. If you are interested in coordinating this fun day for our 5th – 8th grade students, please contact Julee Nunley (email@example.com).

ABS Garden Work Day & Earth Day Celebration
Saturday, April 22, 9 am to 12:00 pm
The ABS Garden celebrates Earth Day on Saturday, April 22. Bring the whole family to do some spring planting and garden maintenance in honor of Earth Day! In addition to the usual playground time for kids who come along, we will have children’s Earth Day activities including seed planting, bouquet making and tasting of garden goodies.

Garden Volunteers Needed
Do you want to take care of ABS volunteer hours on your own time? The ABS garden is organizing for next year! Since we’re losing our long-term garden guru, Matt Mayers, we’ve got to regroup and find new garden caretakers. We’re looking for volunteers to steward one small part of the ABS garden. This job can happen in one hour a week or four hours a month. No experience is necessary! Please be in touch with Kristen Haaf if you want to learn more! email@example.com
Want to be the Assistant Principal?
First Friday Sing is this Friday, April 7! Time to purchase your raffle tickets to give your child a chance to be Assistant Principal of the Day! Yes, your child (of any grade level) can serve as Principal Hollis’ Assistant for an entire day! Assistant Principals have their own desk, name tag, and list of “Principal Duties” for the day! Simply stop by either front office and purchase your raffle tickets today ($1/ticket, $5 for 6 tickets). All proceeds from the raffle support our Hospitality fund and allow us to do special things for our staff throughout the year.
These spring showers have caused more water trouble for us this week. Although we have addressed several drainage problems over the past year in the 7th Street building, we continue to have water issues. During our Spring Break, we will be replacing the damaged drainage pipe that runs between the two buildings and waterproofing the exterior wall. We appreciate the patience and flexibility of our 6th grade students and teachers as they have had to move classrooms frequently this past week. Soon we will be singing in the rain instead of worrying!
Your child’s current classroom teacher will meet with the grade level team to create the class rosters for the next year. They use all that they know about your child’s academic, social, emotional, and behavioral qualities to determine which classroom is the best match. Parent requests will be considered but must be received by the classroom teacher before May 1.
You may have heard in the news that certain lots of Mylan Epi-Pens have been recalled due to the potential that these devices may contain a defective part that may result in the devices’ failure to activate. All epi-pens at the school have been reviewed and are not included in the recall.
Builder’s Club Fundraiser
Join Builders Club today in the Seventh street building from 3:30-6pm. Builders Club is sponsoring a Lularoe event to sell clothing and other merchandise. A percentage of the proceeds made by the vendors will be donated to the Eliminate Project in Builders Club’s name.
Jump Rope and Collect Sponsors
Spring break is the perfect time to be out jumping rope and collecting sponsors for Jump Rope for Heart, which will be held on April 21. So kindergartners through 5th graders, go jump like a bunny!
Save the Date
Be The Match Walk will be held on Saturday, April 29th from 9am – 1 pm. Mrs. Meeks, Ms. Christian and Ms. Cohen are assembling “class teams” and are looking for walkers. This is sponsored by K-Kids and we hope that ABS has at least 25 participants this year. This organization helps fight leukemia and other bone marrow diseases by matching donors to patients. Folks aged 18 – 44 are encouraged to come out and be swabbed to check if they are a match. You can literally save a life!! For more information, go to BeTheMatch.org
Registration is open for Camp Shakespeare! July 17-21, 2017 from 9am-4pm at UNCSA. The cost is: $230 base price, $275 with lunch, and $15 for a t-shirt. We are looking at the following plays: Hamlet, Julius Caesar, Much Ado About Nothing, Richard III, and Twelfth Night. Mr. Bob & Ms. Heidi are there, along with some new teachers!
